From the exotic Far East comes the world’s most riveting acrobatic troupe whose astonishing acts inspire the same awe and wonder in audiences today as they did a more than a millennium ago. Direct from Beijing, The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China bring four performances of its latest acrobatic spectacle, “Cirque Peking,” to the Northern Virginia area, appearing at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014 at 4 p.m., and at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts in Fairfax on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Pre-performance discussions, free to ticketholders, will be held 45 minutes prior to each performance in the Buchanan Partners Art Gallery at the Hylton Center and Grand Tier III at the Center for the Arts (sponsored by the Friends of the Center for the Arts).

“Spectacular stunts,” says The Anchor about The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China, “… the acrobats laughed in the face of gravity.” Since its founding in 1951, the troupe has had more than 200 of its acrobats win prestigious international awards and competitions. In 1972, the company served as performing arts ambassadors and was invited to the White House by President Richard Nixon as a part of the reestablishment of the formal diplomatic relationship between the United States and China. More than 40 years later, The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China have performed for audiences in more than 500 cities in 70 countries across the globe, thrilling generations of circus-goers with dazzling acts of tumbling, juggling, contortion, balancing and high-flying athleticism, complemented by traditional and modern Chinese music, colorful costumes, amazing sets and imaginative props.
